Community Involvement
The Riding of the Bounds isn’t just about horses – it’s a celebration of community, tradition, and local pride. From schoolchildren to shopkeepers, it’s heartening to see so many people play their part in keeping the spirit of the ride alive.
Sashing Evening
The Sashing of the Principals is one of the most special moments in the lead-up to the ride.
Held the night before the ride at Berwick Guildhall, this formal ceremony sees the Chief Marshal, Left-Hand and Right-Hand formally presented to the town. Surrounded by family, friends, and supporters, it’s a proud and emotional moment – the point where all their hard work becomes real.
School Visits & Design Competition
Each year, the Principals visit local primary schools to talk about the history of the ride, their roles, and what it means to represent the town. It’s a brilliant opportunity to inspire future riders – and to share Berwick’s traditions with a new generation.
Pupils are invited to take part in a design competition, creating Riding of the Bounds–themed artwork. Winners receive small prizes and their work is displayed on ride day.
Junior Mascot Competition
The Junior Mascot plays a key role on ride day, leading the cavalcade on foot before joining the riders later in the route. Each year, applications are open to children aged 10–14 who live locally and have a love of horses, community, and tradition.
Shop Window Competition
Berwick’s town centre comes alive in the days leading up to the ride, with shopfronts dressed in blue, gold, and all things equestrian.
Local businesses are invited to take part in our Shop Window Competition, judged by the Principal Riders and committee members. It’s always a tough decision, as so many windows go above and beyond – but it’s a lovely way to show support and bring the town together.
Decorating the Town
It wouldn’t be the Bounds without the bunting!
Each year, volunteers help decorate the town with blue and gold bunting, flags, and displays in the days leading up to the event. Households and businesses are encouraged to join in, creating a welcoming route for riders and visitors alike.
